EPRDF And Affilates To Get At Least 98.3% of Parliamentary Seats
(Addis Neger staff)
With counting in most constituencies completed, Addis Neger projects EPRDF and its affiliates to get at least 538 out of the 547 national parliamentary seats. The party won all seats in Amhara and Tigray. In Addis Ababa, the ruling party just lost one seat to the opposition Medrek. In SNNPR, a pro-EPRDF independent candidate beat an EPRDF candidate in Bonga. Reports from Oromia suggest that no opposition candidate has so far won any seat.
According to our sources, this extraordinary outcome has caught diplomats in Addis Ababa off guard. In the French and American embassies, confused diplomats were frantically asking questions trying to make sense of the numbers. EU monitors today said that the elections “fall short of international commitments.”
EPRDF leaders and supporters, however, claimed that the landslide show that the party has regained the confidence of Ethiopians.
