  1. Who is to blalme for this? Can anyone with economic understanding explain to us? It is obvious that following the devaluation inflation will occur. The devaluation is a macroeconomic phenomenon that cut across all economic activities in the country. If the increase in price is considered as an economic problem, then it is the government to be blamed for misguided decision. Putting a price ceiling on selected products leaving most of the other equally important products untouched is unjust action. Our government, with its canning knowledge of statistics, knows above all who will be affected and who will be advantaged by this regulation, as it does when the devaluation was enacted. Anyway, I believe this time around the business community is not to be blamed for the inflation.

  2. ***cunning

  3. Well, I think the decision is right. I dont know much about economics but ethiopian retailers and merchants in general are selfish and not responsible. It is good to have the law atleast untill we have responsible retailers. Even i can say that this is the first thing eprdf has done to benefit the people and the country. most of other things were done for political benefits.

  4. Here we go, price control like Derg

    • The most important thing is stopping the trend…we need to think putting ourselves on the places of those who are suffering…what matters is a relief, whether it comes from EPRDF or Derg, we don’t care….what we need is just someone who can control those selfish merchants..

  5. It is so surprising that these people think this would help the problem of persistent inflation in the country. Instead of identifying the real causes of the peoples’ pain and work towards the solutions, they prefer to work on symptoms – futile exercise! It is difficult to say that they are so ignorant to understand this- may be they may have another hidden agenda.

  6. you people didn’t get it at all!!! we are dying! we don’t care who is the culprit but the unreasonable price hikes are killing us..whether this solution came from the government or anybody else, what we care about is the regulation of commodity prices…we really need that!!! we don’t have to die to protect free market economy..people should come first irrespective of any ideology…if we have to go back to communism and if it protects us from those cruel cold-blooded merchants, let it be!!!

  7. Guys the issue is not about ideology rather it is about workability. Let me share you one story. As most of you remember, Derg tried to introduce such kind of price ceilings on consumption items. One of the items was egg – it was ordered to be 10 eggs for 1 birr. The day after the announcement of the prices, a guy went to the market and asked for eggs. But the merchant told him that it’s 8 eggs for 1 birr, the guy surprised and asked the merchant weather she heard yesterday’s announcement by the government. The Merchant replied “YE DERG DORO ASHEKAKACH ENJI MECHE TALECH?”

    • So, Yakob, what is the solution? do you say that the market take care of itself? we waited but our merchants didn’t mind, except adding prices. At one time they even tried to sell a kilo of salt for 10 birr!
Just put yourself in the shoes of those earning less than 1000 birr per month. what do you suggest as both a short term and longterm solution?
for me, what I want right now is someone that can stop those monsters from eating me alive, whether EPRDF or Derg, I don’t care.
that is the problem of us Ethiopians. we just observe things from distance and judge , without actually contributing a solution

  8. This is a ridiculous effort by zenawi and company. The Derg tried it and failed miserably. The Derg even killed the berbere negadies,. That did not stop price hike. The cause for price hike is shortage of commodity. If there is shortage of commodity, the issue is who will get it first. Those who pay the highest will get it and the price will be fixed there. If the shortage of commodity continues, another price hike will follow. So the whole issue reflects how the country really has not developed in real sense. Now there comes a time where who praise the Derg administration. People could buy food and feed themselves, except a problem of once in a decade of drought. Under TPLF it is perpetual poverty, including the poverty of the middle class. No body is better of today except those linked to woyanies. This was not the case under the Derg. To mention an example, the Derg administration used to pay 500 birr per month for new graduates. Now the cost of living has increased ten times. Woyanie administration now pays say 1000 birr per month. In real terms the salary of the present graduates is just 100 birr. Can you see how the life of people has fallen through the years under woyanies. At this time I do not mind if the Derg officials walk freely out of prison. They have done better job compared to the woyanies. They have fed their subjects properly. Woyanies are killing us alive.

  9. Does this trade rule implemented on EPRDF
    business organizations(TIRET)? if so how?

  10. I believe the main problem is from the government the reason why I said this is because the government is accusing the suppliers. The government said it is monopolized by few rich suppliers of the commodity. But the question is why there r few suppliers and why it is monopolized? The answer is it is because the government allowed few people to become suppliers and made other suppliers to be pushed out of the market for its political power. So here is the last result that is shortage, poverty and backwardness. Anyways the solution is one that is dead to the mafia/EPRDF/.May God bless Ethiopia.

  11. by the way, do you know that other developing countries have put such measures long time ago?? take Malaysia for example. they have control on prices such as salt, sugar, flour…
We desperately needed such measures…it was so late anyways

  12. would you please educate me about this price cap especially in one item? How does it be possible for the merchant to sell meat for just $52 when there is no price cap for the farmer to sell his Ox (Bere)where it stands over $9000 now . will the government stop meat and cattle exporters to do their business? if not, do not you see the complete disappearance of meat product from Ethiopia’s market ?

  13. Price cap in a free market economy is a sign of failure of TPLF regime’s policy. There is no national emergency to do so.
