AEUP Reelect Hailu Shawel

The All Ethiopia Unity Party (AEUP) has again reelected its long serving president, Engineer Hailu Shawel, despite prior hints and speculation that he would hand over the top position.

The party announced the reelection at the end of its three-day biennial General Assembly, held at IBEX Hotel. Around 300 participants of the General Assembly decided on Sunday December 26, 2010 that the president should remain in his current position.

During previous interviews to local media outlets, Hailu expressed his intention to leave the presidency position. Weekend newspapers also reported that Hailu will not continue to chair the party but will remain a “patron”.

But members of the party felt differently. They explained that they have not yet seen any party official capable of replacing Hailu. “We do not have trust in others,” one party member told Addis Neger Online.

Members of the party noted that the last day of the assembly began with a jovial mood.  The band, Moresh, entertained the assembly participants with “patriotic” songs.  Some party members danced with the singers, while others recorded the event on their mobile phones.

The mood continued in the afternoon session following the reelection of the president. Journalists were not allowed to cover the reelection process.
