  1. Animal Farm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. For Dr.Birhanu, his own amazing book “Yenetsanet Goh Siked”.

  3. Purpose Drieven Life By Rick Warren.

  4. Of course you asked for a book title but what comes to mind is, most of the biographies of leaders indicated that they influenced by a few writers or may be just one: and began to justify things according to that thought, like a freshman student who just read a philosophy for the first time and began to measure things with only one parameter. So what they need is variety not just a title.

  5. Biography of Nelson Mandela!

  6. nigeren enji atidebiken

  7. 1. Gebrehiwot Baykedagne’s ”
    2. Karl Marx’s ”Wage-Labor and Capital”

  8. I do not question the intent of the author here. But he is putting us in unfair pedestal where we all know the unfair poltical involvement of some and the majority left out. I do not believe that reading such books are any reflection of the social, politicalhow and overall structure of the society at large. In a country where print is under the control of the ruling elites it is no wonder that you would find that reflection on the book shelves. In short we are too far away to be blessed with the notion of the author.

  9. Granted books are foundtions. I dothink most of our politicians have read both the “wrong” the “right” books. A good number of them are “well-read” for functioning as poleticians in Ethiopia. What is lacking is: Thinking critically, including common sense, courage, wisdom and creativity. As an old-time revolutionary and as a close observer of Addis Neger, I am afraid you are re-starting the old debtera/Shek tendency of Ethiopians of seeking solution in certain books. You can list the books that must be read, I have no objection to it. However, i am afraid, this is a continuation of a tendency within the Addis Neger crows that promotes political solutions are found in the “right” books. If we muster our common sense, courage, creativty and the likes I think we have red enough to b e effective politicians. This does not mean let us stop reading!!

    • You contradict yourself. Creativity is not mystical experience or witchcraft, it is about understanding previous experience, being imaginative and creating new alterantives. It is like traveling the unbeaten trails, but you need to know what has been tried and how it ended up. Thanks for language and technology, humanity can benefit from the experience of lives thousands of years back.

  10. I wish the writer wouldn’t attribute the lack of timely, revealing and exmplary biographic account of our leaders as something inherent in the Ethiopian culture, but rather the absence of democratic government or the despotic regimes we had in the past who detest transparency and truth. We should emulate the practice of America where a potential leader is scrutinized with regard to his personality, upbringing, his attitudinal disposition on important aspects such as society, honesty, diligence, freedom, equality and justice, and whether he is ‘sane’ enough to be a leader.

I recommend our politicians to read the biographies of prominent leaders and political men in the past such as: Ghandi, Mandella, the founding fathers of USA, Abraham Lincoln, Hitler, Mussoloni, and other historical books on the rise and fall of empires, the history of sucessful democracies, and the novel ’1984′…………

  11. Let them read the people it self!!!.what the people really want, what is lacking and what shall they do as leaders to answer the real people’s questions?

  12. Erasachewunina yemiyastedadrutin hizb yanibu

  13. A Long Walk to Freedom, Neber I and II (to know how tricky our politicians in the same squad!), and Other Leadership skill developing books. They need also to keep themselves abreast of development reports of all kind to know the status of the country they are leading. Above all, local independent newspapers to listen the voice of the people.

  14. Here are my recommendations:
    1. “The State in Africa: The Politics of the Belly” by Jean-Francois Bayart
    2. “Development as Freedom” by Amartya Sen

  15. 1.A long way to freedom!!!!

  16. First of all we have a government, our politicians have to be accept this reaility and respect each other 2nd have to know Ethiopian people not only tribs in addition to that the people political understanding. this are the most important point to bring chang in Ethiopia. I propose to read for our politicians ” A LONG WALK TO FREEDOM ”
    God Bless Ethiopia !

  17. Well lots of those books. But once a friend told me “the story of the framer” who went out to sow seed, narrated by Jesus Christ. “As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. and some fell….” You probably know the story. Even words as powerful as the word of God, need “fertile soil” to grow and thrive. All those who adore or abhor PM Meles do not doubt that he has read all the right books. But so did many despots in history. Sometimes it is more about character than knowledge, and, even worse, it is much more difficult to deal with smart bad people than the stupid ones.

  18. To read and practice Bible/quran

  19. The best thing to start with is to know about our histor, culture and our people. Listening to Ethiopia people is the most important thing.

to suggest books I would say:

‘The open society its enemies’ Karl Popper
    ‘Identity and Violence’ Amartya Sen

  20. Sorry to see some of the trash comments above. Here are my recommendations which are not listed above:
    1. You Can Win – By Shiv Khera
    2. Dertogada- By Yismake Worku
    3. Yehule Hawult Wegoch -By Daniel Kibret.
    4. The Adocacy of hope- By Barack Obama
    5. Kibre Negest
    6. Democracy and the Rule of Law-By
    Adam Przeworski
    7. Participatory Democracy Versus
    Elitist Democracy: Lessons from Brazil
    By-William R. Nylen
    8. Apart from books, i recommend them to read also some blogs targeting to Demolish Ethiopia.

    • Why should they read “blogs that target to demolish Ethiopia” and not those which try to build it, like Addis Neger. And, although you did not specify which comments were “trash” in your opinion, I see no wrong in suggesting other books other than those in your list OR to rather argue that it is not much about reading certain books. I do not have the “adocacy” to go through your list though:)

  21. Most of our people are well read. Some writers have commented that our intellectuals are walking I do agree with them.

Let me give it a twist. Our people should develop a habit of reading. Reading good books molds a character. Our children and young men and women should start reading as early as possible. Our very few and brilliant students do have a chance to read but let us create a broader base so that the people do understand what the well read readers tell them for the betterments of their lives and the future of their nations.

Well read reader and researchers had made great impacts on their national and international issues. And save millions of lives and blessed our Earth.

I wish our leaders to read great books that had been written since Greeks and Romans. It is very difficult to numerate the whole list of books. However I have may favorite writers.

    Johanatan swift.
    Charles Dickens
    William Shakespeare
    Henry David Thoreau
    Abraham Lincoln
    Chinua Achebe
    Julius Nererey.
    Plutarch
    The Holly Bible.

I have two books that I have been using as guiding and starting place to choose books. They categorize all aspects of knowledge according to their disciplines:

    History
    Philosophy
    Science
    Religion
    Poetry
    Biography
    Travel
    Miscellaneous

To get good collection of great books
    please find the following books.

Outlines of Great Books by Sir J. A. Hammerton

I quote one of the editors introduction remarks, ” to any reader, young or old, scholar or layman. I would say one thing: no great book was ever written to be lectured on or explained in schools. Every masterpiece was written for the use of men.

Do not be frightened by famous names . Don’t think that famous books are dull. They wouldn’t be famous now if they hadn’t interested their first readers. Get yourself a comfortable chair and a good light- have confidence in your own mind.”
    John Erskine.
Also I highly recommend to any serious reader and students.

  22. Our Politicians have to to equipe themselves with fundamentals of political philosophy.There fore,in my opinion for the fundamentals;
    1.Plato’s Apology
    2. ” The Republic
    3.Machiavelli”s The Prince
    4.Rouseau’s The Social Contract
    5.Thomas Hobbes’S Leviathan
6.Jhon Locke’s The Two Treatises of Civil Governments..
Politics is multi and discipilinary profession. They must read books on history, sociology geography public adminstaration, Finance, etc. .

  23. I suggest you “Bekur Mesay“ to have in depth looking and identify the reason why I said there are some trash comments. Like the one you already posted above. Do not expect from me to tell you the reason why they are trash. Use your brain and comment on it. I wish if our country leaders read some of those books listed above and then those blogs targeting to demolish our beloved country, they will learn a lot and question themselves. The problem is they are surrounded by people who do not have patience for reading but scanning like you.

  24. 1984 by George Orwell….For His Excellency Meles Zenawi, the big brother looking down on everybody’s shoulder

  25. I consider this a far cry. Do we have leaders to begin with? The people in power have their own devilish agenda and and they are not destroying the country because they don’t know what they are doing, rather they are interested in making sure that there is no country Ethiopia left to bring them to justice. How can they enjoy the money they have stolen otherwise?

  26. 1. BIBLE 2.DR.BEREHANU NEGA NETSANET GOH SIKED 3.YALTBESSU ENBAWOCH. 4.ERASSACHEWN YADAMTU.
