  1. Here is the trick: children can be perfectly bilingual. Let them speak English or French at school but only their mother tongue at home. This has worked with my children.

The root problem is the misconception that you will have “direct access to Western comfort if you speak English”. Many peple don’t seem to understand that you can access it even when you speak English as a second or third language.

  3. This is a symptom of a wider anti-ethiopian sentiment engulfing the new elites of the country. It is disheartening to see that this dangerous anti-ethiopianism is being passed on to the future generation.

It is also disturbing that kids are forced to adopt an artificial mother tongue. What is even more disturbing is the parental blessings that fuels this trend. What these disillusioned parents does not know perhaps is that, speaking english alone -in what is becoming an ever competitive and knowledge driven global economy – will not be adequate enough to prepare the kids for a successful life.

What matters most, ten years twenty years down the line, will be having good aptitude of science, math, history, geography, economics, IT etc. English should be emphasised only to the extent that it helps students to be good students of math, history, geography, chemistry and so on.

Afterall, all indicators are that english will not remain as important as it is today in the coming decades.

  4. Great piece on the failings of our education system and the way we bring up our children!

  5. Thank you thank you thank you Admin/ANO for bringing this issue up. Our country is probably the only country in the world where preschool children are taught a foreign (e.g English) language in the expense of their mother tongue( e.g Amharic). Anyone who loves his country should be worried about this. With language children are becoming oblivious to manythings that makes all of us Ethiopian( food, traditional costumes, dances, songs, history, customs, love of a country etc.).

Children are required to speak English not only in schools, they are also told to do the same at home. I know that some fathers have to go home late after children went to bed to avoid their own children who insist that they talk to them in English. Unwittingly Haile has become a very bad role model by coming out on National TV and with his kids who live in Ethiopia and speak little of the mother tongue. What does this tell parents who watch this program. I am sure they would like their kids to be like Haile’s. Very sad! I have no problem in teaching kids one or more foregin language in the time of globalization. But, it is quite disconcerting when it is done in the expense of many things which is Ethiopian. Thank again ADMIN/ANO

  6. What a heart breaking story!thank you AN for bringing this horrible national crisis to public attention.we need to hammer on this essue.we must try every possible tools to save these kids from their destructive Parents action for just the sake of our future Ethiopia.I think the so called elites in Ethiopia should get extensive civic education and you at AN I believe, are doing that.thank you and keep on the fight.

  7. what can I say? emmmmm The_yegerem !!!

    Wow
What a miraculous feature writing.Well this is the role of media, informing, educating and changing wrong practices. The further publication of this story in various media for instance would quell this wrong practice of planting a foreign culture and language. We are selling our solidarity as a nation—NGOs and organisations should engage themselves before we go extinct.
It has also a political side- whenever there is a regime that is ethno-federalist-centric- the likelihood of language lateralization is possible but not inevitable lol.

  9. One can also see from an angle, that parents has a right to teach his kids in any language he likes, if they think he will be successful. Still the problem is not with the rules by the institute nor with the government, it is with their parents. If you want your kids to learn Amharic send them to appropriate schools even though nobody is borne only to speak Amharic even in Addis.

Guys from Uganda and Spain told me that they have this kind of schools which speaks different language. That is what we are leading to and one should not be frustrated about this.

*Amharic is one of Ethiopian language,

  11. This is one of the living concrete evidence of weak education policy in particular, and a strong doomsday to local languages of any kind in general! Don’t forget that creating sphere of influence through language is very important tool to penetrate strong culture thenceforth markets! A country’s leadership buyout has been going on! TPLF went far away than one has dreamed of! Mr. Meles has been managing to force a smile as we have been crying! Our struggles need a leadership with a bit of get-up-and-go if we want to save all what we have preserved for centuries!

  14. This is indeed a great observation. Thank you. The sad thing is that, not only would the future generation of leaders of our country become ignorant of the native language and every thing associated with it, but they will also learn that, ‘ white people’, their culture their history, mythology and anything associated with them is superior than what our forefathers developed and preserved for us with their sweat and blood.

  15. Very nice comment in general. But you missed one point. You said Ferenji teachers get 5000-7000 birr. This money is nothing compared to what they get in their country. Do not expect them to suffer the way we suffer. In fact they are voluntoring for a small money to share our agony and we should thank them for that.

  16. This is how amharic became to be the domonant language in Ethiopia, by undrmining other local languages, and ofcourse their cultures too. Yiweledal, Yadgal, Yimotal.

  17. But there is also this story that need to be seriously debated about. I hope Addis Neger is not blinded by the dominant culture of Ethiopia. My uncle took me to a school at my early age in an Oromo speaking district. You could count Amharic speaking people in that district in few hundreds. My parents did not know of a word of Amharic. The standing rule of the school was that you have to speak in Amharic once you enter the school compound. But I knew nothing. So the other kids told me that I should communicate with them only through whisper. The first few weeks of my school were so traumatizing that I was forced to drop out of school. My parents took me back again only to face that dreadful atmosphere. Little by little I had to learn the words. Yet I could not spell some of the letters the way native speakers did and I still have difficulty spelling those letters.
It is always good to adopt to pre-school years in ones own language. I know the politics of language. Ethiopian language poltics is still evolving and that may well be why Addis Neger has brought up this issue. But to suggest that Amharic is the mother tongue of the country is self defeating and does not bode well perhaps to over the majority of Ethiopians.

  18. Boona,

To addis ababans, it is. I guess Addis neger is talking about Addis, and more importantly about Haile too.

  19. Boona
What you said is true. There are over 80 ethnic groups their mother tongue is not Amharic. But, there is a big difference between requiring students to learn Amharic and forcing them not use it. Whether we like it or not, historically Amharic has served as the primary communication medium in Ethiopia, very essential for survival of individuals within and outside of specific locality in Ethiopia. If Ethiopia needs additional communication medium (language) beside Amharic, is worth discussing but not from political perspective. It should be from pure utilitarian perspective by experts in the field. If politics involved, it will be a mess and there will be many other competing languages

  20. @ Boona, you are right! It is backwardness to think the politics of language in the ancient time. But I prefer to learn Ethiopian dialects than English. I support to make education in early primary schools by their own native languages. That is great and is done so far. But to kill the giant one (i.e. most of Ethiopian speak) does not guarantee that the other ones are growing. Even dying more than before for as people expect English is better than Amharic, why not they expect that the former is better than their own ethnic language. Therefore, we have so far a nice binding language which makes our history alive and seen yet. But if we think in the other way round, We do have English language as mother tongue like Nigeria! This happened because they couldn’t be one and merged due to shortage of one dominant national language. The same is true in most African countries. If some body wishes so never happen in Ethiopia! People can speak their own dialects freely in Ethiopia provided that there is some counter part who can echo the same!

Although I am not participant in such comments so far, and may be in the future, (but this case was posted on wall of my friend), I am touched how much Ethiopians are loosing our identity at the moment, more than those Africans who were under the evil colonization.

Any ways, God bless Ethiopia and all people as one with binding identity and common thoughts for the centuries to come. And wiz all my wishes to great and respected by the world as ancient times, unlike today that they considered as the poorest in the globe with many people in famine and drought!

    • Boonaa,
When did language separate itself from politics. What do the history books say about this? Inextricably inseparable have they been and will they continue to be. Political power and language have always been married and will remain so until “sin” continues to reign.

  22. Yes, The colonizers have spreaded their ” religion and culture” with second hand clothes and wheats. Now they are succeeded by destrotying the only African langauge which has it’s own alphabets. Thank to those who have been swimming in an identity crisis[ the weyanes] who can not protect ethiopiawinet. Ethiopians became a ssham for human being. Ethiopia is a towwer of water, but we do nt have enough water to drink, ethiopia has a very feteril soil, but most of the people are living on foreign aid. Ethiopia was the first country which has it’s own alphabete, but the coming generation can not understand the langauge, Ethiopia has very annicent history, but the new generation is learning foreign countries’ hsitory in private schools. we are a sham human being who do not have any respect for ours, but looking for foreigners .

  23. Seriously, what is the big deal out of this issue? Amharic is simply one of the Languages Ethiopia has. It is never the only manifestation of Ethiopianism or anything. It is now Post 1991, such thinking and its era have been erased, irretrievably. I may favor my children to grow up with Amharic or I may not. I may prefer them to know more English and Oromiffa than Amharic. Also someone may be needed to know more English and Amharic than Oromiffa. It all depends on which part of the country you live.

Consider the case of Belgium, where there are three languages widely spoken, – no citizen is forced to know them all or only one in particular. It all depends on what you believe is going to help your kids communicate with others for the time being and in the future.

    • It is not about learning only in Amharic. the issue being discussed and the original writer are saying learning English should not be at the expense of Amharic or some other local language. We shouldn’t look for something by dropping what we have.
We are the only the county in Africa where able to write our own language. Almost all other African countries are using the so called international languages as their national language because they don’t have a language that units them.
For me children should be able to learn their own language based on their locality (Amharic, Oromifa, ….) as equally as English and English language shouldn’t be given at the expense of all our languages. Let us stop and think both forward and backward. Let us go out side the indirect colonization.

  24. Superb! Children can grow up mastering more than 2 languages. Excelling in the English language need not come at the expense of their Amharic. A good school is the one that gives both to its students. The issue has many implications other than with the system of Education. Probably, loving Ethiopia means different things to different people.

  25. very nice debate!!!!!!!

  26. This is at best the legacy of Meles and his regime.

  27. Superb piece. One more evidence of our cultural and identity crisis as a society.

I like it.

  29. What a great piece! Some good people are working hard producing modern softwares to teach Ethiopian languages for kids in the diaspora (www.ethioamharic.com, http://www.fhlethiopia.com) including those adopted by foreigners. While ome inside Ethiopia are discouraging kids from learning Amharic. What a contradiction! That is really sad. That is not what we expect from Haile, such a huge figure in Ethiopia.

  30. owners of these schools r enslaving them selves to 21st century colonizers…hey Slaves…do u need the new emancipator? plz our Lincoln give them the path of freedom.

    • If learning Enlish can be tantamount to slavery, according to ur argument, then learning Amharic by a non-Amharic speaker Ethiopian can mean all the same — slavery. Your analogy is perfectly leaving such marks.

  31. I understand the frustration of the writer. But, I do not think there is anything wrong with trying to teach kids English or with the flooding of Addis by English teaching schools. We are not different from the world. If we have to be successful in this competitive world, we have to know English. It is being the language of the world. Even the French are sending their kids to England to let them learn English. The Chinese, the Koreans, The Japaness are sending their kids to the West to learn English, paying thousands of dollars. I love Amharic. But, I also suffered because of my bad English. Amharic did not help me cross the Ethiopian-Kenyan border. Therefore, let’s take it easy. Language is a tool. We need Amharic. We need English more.
    Tekle

  32. So sad. While a lot of parents in the west are trying very hard to teach their children Amharic, parents in Addis are underming their mother tangue. Language wether it is Frech or English is helpfull. But what we are witnessing in Addis is very alrming. It should be halted and reversed.

  33. This reminds me of a time in Eritrea when the italians ruled. During this time Tigringa was banned in school grounds. only italian was tolerated in school grounds. That is of course if you were chosen to learn anything in the first place. However In Ethiopia, more particularly in Addis Ababa, Amharic is being banned in private schools not because of colonialism. Instead this is happening becasue parents have been misguided. They should have some slef pride and allow their kids to learn as many languages as possible, including, most importantly Amharic. As for Haile I must first admit that he is truly patriotic, but he is also very much decieved by the idea speaking English speaking is equivalent to intellegence. I hope he realizes this and changes his mind for the sake of his children. One other thing I must mention here is that of the excellent Amharic spoken by Prime minister Meles Zenawi. His english is also proficient indeed. I disagree with his policies of course, but this is a point I must give credit where credit is due. I wonder if the same could be said of his kids.
